Welcome to the third edition.

/Begin Rant

A general misconception is that all manager roles are the same.

This is simply not true.

Everyone following this newsletter, I assume, comes from a Big 4 background or related. I need you to understand that a Big 4 staff and senior are qualified for manager roles in industry.

The way Big 4 & Consulting companies view managers are a mix:

Technical SMR with Quality Knowledge
People Managers with Direct Reports
Functional Individual Contributors who can crank.

The way industry sees a manager is usually, and strictly, Functional Individual Contributor.

Rule of thumb:

Big 4 Staff/Senior = Compliance Manager / Program Manager / Lead
Big 4 Manager/Senior Manager = Director / Vice President

Look and ask if the job is people manager with more than 2 direct reports. If yes, it’s a true people manager job. If no, it’s an individual contributor role. If it’s both, run since that ain’t sustainable. I mean, you are reading this newsletter.
